Project Overview

This backyard transformation in Cobourg, Ontario represents everything we love about patio installations—taking a problematic outdoor space and converting it into a beautiful, functional area that families can enjoy for years to come. The homeowners, Sarah and Mike Thompson, had been struggling with their backyard for years before deciding to invest in a professional solution.

The project scope included the complete installation of a 400 square foot interlock patio, complete with integrated steps leading from their existing deck, a custom sitting wall for additional seating, and professional drainage solutions to address long-standing water issues. We selected Techo-Bloc Blu 60mm pavers in Sandalwood for this project—a premium choice that offers exceptional durability, slip resistance, and a warm, natural aesthetic that complements the existing home exterior.

The five-day timeline was carefully planned to minimize disruption to the family's daily routine while ensuring each phase of construction received the attention to detail required for a lasting installation. Our crew worked efficiently, arriving early each morning and maintaining a clean, organized job site throughout the project.

The Challenge

When we first visited the Thompson property, it was clear this project would require careful planning and expert execution. The backyard presented several significant challenges that had prevented the family from fully utilizing their outdoor space:

Uneven Sloped Yard

The backyard featured a significant slope that dropped approximately 18 inches from the deck to the back fence. This dramatic grade made the space essentially unusable for furniture placement, and any attempt to place chairs or tables resulted in wobbling and instability. The slope also created difficulties for children playing and made the area feel disconnected from the main entertainment space on the deck.

Poor Drainage Issues

Water management was a persistent problem. During rainfall, water would collect in multiple low spots across the yard, creating muddy areas that took days to dry. The homeowners reported that spring and fall were particularly problematic, with standing water sometimes remaining for over a week after heavy rains. This poor drainage was not only inconvenient but also contributed to mosquito problems and made grass maintenance difficult.

Need for Entertainment Space

The Thompsons love to host family gatherings and barbecues, but their existing deck alone couldn't accommodate larger groups. They needed a dedicated patio area where they could place outdoor furniture, set up a dining table, and create a comfortable flow between the deck and yard. The goal was to extend their living space outdoors and create a cohesive entertainment area.

Low Maintenance Requirements

With busy work schedules and active children, the last thing the homeowners wanted was a high-maintenance outdoor feature. They specifically requested a solution that would require minimal ongoing care—no annual sealing, no weeding between stones, and no constant repairs. This requirement led us to recommend premium interlock pavers with proper edge restraint and joint stabilization systems.

The Solution

After careful assessment and consultation with the homeowners, we developed a comprehensive solution that addressed every challenge while creating the beautiful outdoor space they envisioned. Our approach combined proven hardscaping techniques with high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting results.

Deep Excavation for Stability

We excavated the entire patio area to a depth of 14 inches, removing all organic material, roots, and unsuitable soil. This deep excavation was essential for creating a stable foundation that would resist frost heave and settlement over time. In the Cobourg climate, where winter temperatures regularly drop below -20°C, proper base preparation is critical for preventing paver shifting and maintaining a level surface year after year.

Professional Base Installation with Compaction

The foundation of any great patio is its base. We installed 8-10 inches of Granular A base material in carefully controlled lifts, compacting each layer with a plate compactor to achieve 98% standard Proctor density. This multi-layer approach creates a rock-solid foundation that distributes loads evenly and prevents the settling that causes uneven surfaces. We tested compaction levels throughout to ensure consistent quality.

Subtle Slope for Optimal Drainage

Our grading solution incorporated a subtle 1% slope away from the house and deck structure, directing water flow toward the yard's natural drainage path. This gentle grade is virtually imperceptible when standing or walking on the patio but effectively prevents water accumulation. We also integrated a discreet drainage channel along one edge to handle heavy rainfall events.

Integrated Steps from Deck

To create seamless transition between the deck and new patio, we designed and built custom steps that matched the paver material and complemented the deck's existing architecture. The two-step descent provides comfortable access while creating a natural focal point that draws visitors into the new entertainment space. Precise measurements and careful cutting ensured perfect alignment with the deck structure.

Custom Sitting Wall

Adding both functionality and visual interest, we constructed a sitting wall along one edge of the patio using matching wall units capped with complementary stone. This feature provides casual seating for approximately 6-8 people, defines the patio boundary, and creates a sense of enclosure that makes the space feel intimate and inviting. The wall also serves a practical purpose by retaining the grade change at the patio's edge.

The Installation Process

Our five-day installation followed a proven methodology that ensures quality results while maintaining efficient progress.

Day 1

Excavation and Grading

The project began with complete site preparation. Using a mini-excavator, we carefully removed the existing sod, soil, and organic material to the specified 14-inch depth. Throughout excavation, we paid special attention to avoiding damage to the existing deck foundation and nearby landscaping. Once the area was excavated, we established proper grades for drainage, creating the subtle slope that would ensure water flows away from structures. We also used this day to remove all excavated material from the site, leaving a clean workspace.

Day 2

Base Installation

With the excavation complete, we began building the foundation that would support the patio for decades. We brought in high-quality Granular A material and spread it in 4-inch lifts—meaning we added approximately 4 inches at a time, compacted thoroughly, then added the next layer. Each lift received multiple passes with a plate compactor until we achieved the specified density. This methodical approach prevents the soft spots and future settlement that plague poorly constructed patios. By day's end, we had a solid, level base ready for the next phase.

Day 3

Edge Restraints and Screed

Edge restraint installation is critical for maintaining paver alignment over time. We installed concrete edge restraints around the entire perimeter, securing them with 10-inch galvanized spikes driven into the compacted base. For curved sections, we carefully scored and shaped the restraints to follow the design contours. Next, we set up screed rails and spread 1 inch of HPB (High Performance Bedding) material—angular stone that provides perfect support and drainage beneath the pavers. The screeding process created a perfectly level surface that would ensure consistent paver heights.

Day 4

Paver Installation

This was the day the patio truly began to take shape. Working from the deck steps outward, we began laying the Techo-Bloc Blu pavers in a random three-piece pattern that creates natural visual interest. Our installation crew maintained consistent joint spacing throughout, using spacers to ensure uniformity. We worked methodically across the surface, checking alignment regularly with string lines and levels. By the end of day four, the entire patio surface was laid, with only the edge cuts remaining for the following day.

Day 5

Cutting, Compaction, and Sanding

The final day brought everything together. We made all necessary edge cuts using a wet saw, ensuring clean, precise lines along the patio perimeter and around the sitting wall. After cutting was complete, we swept the entire surface clean and ran a plate compactor with a rubber mat over the pavers—this vibration settles the pavers into the bedding layer and locks them together. Finally, we swept polymeric sand into all joints and activated it with water, creating a solid, weed-resistant surface that will maintain its appearance for years with minimal maintenance.

Results

The Transformation

The completed patio exceeded the homeowners' expectations in every way. What was once a problematic, sloped yard with drainage issues became a stunning, level entertainment space that seamlessly connects to the existing deck. The Sandalwood colour of the Techo-Bloc pavers creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that complements the home's exterior and surrounding landscape.

The integrated steps now provide graceful transition between deck and patio, while the sitting wall offers flexible seating options and visual definition. Most importantly, the drainage solutions work perfectly—even after heavy spring rains, water flows away from the patio as designed, with no standing water or wet spots.

"Northumberland Landscaping transformed our unusable backyard into our favourite place to entertain. The attention to detail was incredible—from the perfectly level surface to the beautiful sitting wall that's become everyone's favourite spot. The crew was professional, respectful of our property, and finished exactly on schedule. We couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. This patio has completely changed how we use our outdoor space!"

💡 Maintenance Tips for Your Interlock Patio

  • Sweep regularly: Remove leaves and debris weekly to prevent staining and organic buildup
  • Rinse seasonally: A garden hose rinse removes dirt and refreshes the appearance
  • Top up joint sand annually: Check polymeric sand levels each spring and add sand to any depleted joints
  • Address weeds promptly: Remove any weed growth immediately to prevent root systems from compromising the base
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Use mild soap solutions for cleaning; avoid pressure washers that can damage joint sand
  • Seal every 3-5 years (optional): While not required, sealing can enhance colour and provide additional stain protection
